Deep Water, Rising

Bass snatch at frogs in weeds along the bank,

Dragonflies dart, stop, dash, endless stalking,

Birds swoop and grab at bugs, peckers knock, and trees

Lean toward water, rustling leaves

To flirt with heavy air.

Dragonfly flits across my eye and drops;

Dead on the water; waiting.

Tugged and tasted, in frenzied minute

A muddy blur on glass.  Turtle plops off log.

Minnows resume lazy patrols, large fish

Peer from deep water, rising.
